Year 10 English is the final year of the WA curriculum proper, and everything narrows toward what comes next. Texts carry abstract themes and moral complexity, analysis now weighs competing interpretations and the evidence behind them, and your child's writing is expected to show a personal style, not just competence. The choices made at the end of this year shape their entire senior schooling.
Where Year 10 sits in the journey
Year 10 completes the Language, Literature and Literacy journey your child began in Year 7. They read complex narratives and sophisticated non-fiction, evaluate how other readers have interpreted the same text and whether the evidence holds, and pull together specialised information from credible sources. Their own writing across imaginative, informative and persuasive purposes is judged on control and individual voice. Meanwhile, students who have not yet met the WACE literacy standard sit the OLNA, and everyone chooses their Year 11 English course.

Year 10 is the hinge of secondary English in WA. Students who have not yet demonstrated the WACE literacy standard sit the OLNA this year, and every student chooses between senior English pathways, including ATAR English, Literature and General English. Those choices flow directly from Year 10 confidence and results. Because an English course is effectively compulsory through to Year 12 and ATAR English marks feed university entry, momentum built now pays out for three more years.

What is the OLNA and how does Year 10 English relate to it?
The OLNA is Western Australia's online literacy and numeracy assessment. Students who did not prequalify through Year 9 NAPLAN must pass the OLNA reading and writing components, along with numeracy, to achieve their WACE. Year 10 English builds the same comprehension and writing skills the OLNA measures, so solid classwork is genuine preparation.
Should my child choose ATAR English or Literature in Year 11?
ATAR English works with a broad range of texts including media and non-fiction, while Literature ATAR goes deeper into novels, poetry and drama. Keen analytical readers often thrive in Literature; students who prefer breadth and argument often prefer English. Talk to their Year 10 teacher, who has seen their strengths up close.
Do Year 10 English marks matter for ATAR?
Not directly, since the ATAR is calculated from Year 11 and 12 results, but they matter enormously for placement. Schools use Year 10 performance to recommend senior courses, and starting an ATAR course underprepared is far harder than arriving with momentum.
