In Year 7, HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) brings history, geography, economics and civics together into one subject about how people live, decide and organise themselves. It is your child's first secondary look at the human world, stretching from societies tens of thousands of years old to the democracy they live in today.
Where Year 7 sits in the journey
Year 7 opens the secondary HASS journey with the longest view your child will ever take: the deep time history of Australia's First Nations peoples and the great societies of the ancient world. Alongside that, geography asks what makes a place worth living in, economics introduces how markets and money decisions work, and civics explains the Constitution and the democracy built on it. The year is deliberately broad, because the next three years deepen every one of these threads.
What the curriculum covers
History
Your child studies the deep time history of Australia's First Nations peoples, then travels into the ancient world through societies such as Egypt, Greece, Rome, India or China. They learn how historians actually know things, working from sources and evidence rather than just remembering dates.
Geography
Two big investigations: water as our most precious resource, and what makes a place liveable. Your child learns to read maps and data properly, and to think about why people live where they live.
Economics and Business
Why markets exist, how consumers and producers respond to each other, and how to set money goals and make sensible spending decisions. For many children this is their first structured thinking about money.
Civics and Citizenship
How Australia's democracy works: the Constitution, how it can change through referendums, and how the legal system aims to treat people fairly. Your child learns what it means to be a citizen, not just live here.
HASS skills
Asking good questions, weighing up sources, building an argument from evidence and communicating it clearly. These skills are assessed every year through to Year 10 and feed directly into stronger writing everywhere.
This year, your child will
HASS is where children learn to think about people the way science teaches them to think about nature: with evidence, perspective and care. Year 7 sets the reading, writing and reasoning habits the subject relies on for the next four years, and it quietly builds the general knowledge that pays off in English essays, class debates and everyday conversation. Year 7 is often where curiosity about the wider world takes hold, and that is worth protecting.
