Year 7 is your child's first year of secondary science, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. This is the year they learn that science is not a pile of facts. It is a way of asking questions about the world and testing the answers.

Where Year 7 sits in the journey

Under the Western Australian Curriculum, Year 7 Science introduces the four big branches your child will follow all the way to Year 10: biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space. The ideas are deliberately foundational, because every later year builds directly on them. A student who ends Year 7 confident in these foundations walks into Year 8 ahead of the game.

Chemical sciences

Earth and space sciences

Why we see the phases of the Moon, seasons, eclipses and tides. Your child learns to explain the sky with models of the Earth, Sun and Moon, and to classify what is out there, from planets and moons to comets and galaxies.

Physical sciences

Forces: pushes, pulls, gravity, friction and magnetism, and the simple machines that multiply them. This is where physics starts feeling real, because forces are everywhere your child looks.

Science inquiry

Planning reproducible investigations, measuring carefully, graphing results and explaining what the evidence actually shows. These skills are assessed every single year through to Year 10.
