Where Year 9 sits in the journey

Year 9 sits at the turning point of lower secondary science in Western Australia. Is science part of NAPLAN in Year 9?

No, NAPLAN tests literacy and numeracy rather than science. That said, the skills overlap heavily: interpreting graphs, reading data and writing clear explanations are core to both, so strong science habits tend to lift NAPLAN performance and vice versa.

Does Year 9 Science affect senior school subject choices?

Indirectly, yes. Schools look at Year 9 and 10 performance when recommending ATAR science courses, and more importantly, Year 9 is where the foundations for those courses are laid. Chemical equations in particular are non-negotiable for anyone considering ATAR Chemistry.

How do I help a Year 9 student who has lost interest in science?
